Yes, the Berberis planter is made for it: balconies, patios, windowsills and gardens. An overflow system drains away excess water, for example after a downpour. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the overflow plug supplied is for indoor use only. It is suitable for flowers, herbs, salad leaves, strawberry plants and small vegetables. Plants that like to dry out between waterings, such as cacti, will be less happy in it.

Pour water into the Berberis through the wide filling opening, without letting it overflow, and keep an eye on the water level indicator: it shows you how much water is left. After planting, the manufacturer recommends watering from above for about 14 days, while the roots establish themselves; after that, simply fill the reservoir when the indicator is low. There is no need to keep it full all the time: compost that dries out slightly suits most plants better.

Fill the Berberis with a light, free-draining potting compost, so that the growing medium does not stay waterlogged above the irrigation strips. For your flowers, strawberry plants or small vegetables, mix 30% vermicompost with 70% potting compost at planting time, then give diluted compost tea from time to time (1 part to 9 parts water). Go easy on it: fertiliser salts build up in a container that does not drain. Flush the compost in the Berberis planter with plenty of water now and then, and replace it every year.
